Will my child be asleep during sedation?

It depends on the option. With nitrous oxide your child stays fully awake and can talk to us. With oral sedation they become drowsy and relaxed, and may drift in and out, but are not fully asleep. With IV sedation your child sleeps through treatment and usually remembers nothing afterward. We will explain exactly what your child will experience before the visit.

Does my child need to fast before sedation?

For nitrous oxide alone, usually not — a light meal beforehand is best. For oral and IV sedation, yes. You will receive written instructions with exact times for when your child needs to stop eating and drinking. These rules are important for safety, so if your child eats or drinks outside the window, call us and we will reschedule.

What happens after my child's sedation visit?

After nitrous oxide, your child can go right back to school or their normal day. After oral or IV sedation, plan a quiet day at home with an adult watching them, soft foods, and no school or sports. Most kids are back to normal by the next morning. You will get written aftercare instructions, and we call that evening to check on your child.
