Yes, at the doses used in a dental office. Professionally applied fluoride varnish is endorsed by the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for children starting at the first tooth. The varnish sets on contact and is painted on in a very small amount, so almost none of it is swallowed. The real risk parents read about — dental fluorosis — comes from chronic overexposure to swallowed fluoride during the years the permanent teeth are forming, usually from toothpaste being eaten or from supplements given unnecessarily, not from a twice-yearly varnish.

Every six months for most children, applied at the routine cleaning. Children at higher risk — a history of cavities, braces, dry mouth, a diet heavy in juice or sticky snacks, or well water with no fluoride — often do better on a three- or four-month schedule. We will tell you which category your child is in and why.

Yes, right away. We only ask that you avoid hot drinks, crunchy or sticky foods, and brushing until the following morning. The varnish needs that time in contact with the enamel to do its work. Your child may notice a slightly filmy feeling on their teeth overnight, which is completely normal and brushes off easily in the morning.

Often yes. Most bottled water contains little to no fluoride, and many home filtration systems remove it as well. If your family drinks primarily bottled or filtered water, or you are on a private well, your child is getting less daily fluoride than the average kid. Tell us at your visit and we may recommend more frequent varnish or a prescription toothpaste.

A smear the size of a grain of rice for children under three, and a pea-sized amount from age three to six. Supervise brushing at these ages and teach spitting rather than swallowing. This is where the meaningful fluoride exposure happens for most children, and getting the amount right at home matters more than any single office visit.
