Is Fluoride Safe for Children? Straight Answers for Florida Parents

What Fluoride Does for Teeth

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral. When it touches the surface of a tooth, it helps rebuild weak spots in the enamel and makes the tooth more resistant to the acids that cause cavities. It works best when small amounts are applied to the teeth often, which is why toothpaste and professional varnish are so effective.

What Changed in Florida

In July 2025, Florida became the second state to stop adding fluoride to public drinking water. That means many Central Florida families are no longer getting the low, steady level of fluoride that tap water used to provide. For children, this makes fluoride toothpaste and in-office fluoride varnish more important than they were a few years ago.

Is Fluoride Varnish Safe?

Professional fluoride varnish is one of the safest ways to protect a child’s teeth. It is painted onto the teeth in a thin layer, sticks there for several hours, and very little is swallowed. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both recommend varnish for young children, starting when the first tooth appears.

At our offices, a fluoride treatment takes about two minutes. Kids pick a flavor, we paint it on, and they can eat soft foods right away. You can see the full process on our fluoride treatment for kids page.

How Much Fluoride Toothpaste Is Safe?

Most concerns about fluoride come from children swallowing too much toothpaste over a long period. Using the right amount prevents that:

  • Under age three: a smear about the size of a grain of rice
  • Ages three to six: a pea-sized amount
  • Older children: a pea-sized amount, spit out after brushing without a big rinse
  • Always supervise brushing and store toothpaste out of reach of little hands

What Is Dental Fluorosis?

Fluorosis is the most common side effect of too much fluoride while adult teeth are forming, usually before age eight. In most cases it shows up as faint white lines or specks on the teeth. It is cosmetic, does not hurt, and does not weaken the teeth. Using the recommended toothpaste amounts is the simplest way to prevent it.

Signs Your Child May Need Extra Fluoride

Your pediatric dentist may recommend fluoride varnish more often, sometimes every three months, if your child:

  • Has had cavities recently
  • Drinks mostly bottled or filtered water
  • Wears braces or another appliance
  • Snacks or sips sugary drinks often
