This is not a first-line option and we will not suggest it lightly. But for some children it is clearly the kindest path.

IV Sedation

The IV Sedation Process in 4 Steps
Every IV sedation case is planned in advance across at least two appointments. Nothing happens on the same day you first ask about it.
Step 1: Consultation and Medical Clearance
We review your child's complete medical history, medications, allergies, and airway. We obtain clearance from your child's pediatrician when their history warrants it, and we discuss the risks and benefits fully with you.
Step 2: Preparation at Home
You receive written instructions with exact fasting times — typically no solid food after midnight and clear liquids stopped several hours before. Following these precisely is a genuine safety requirement, not a formality.
Step 3: Treatment With Continuous Monitoring
The IV line is placed and medication is titrated carefully. Oxygen saturation, heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration are monitored continuously by a dedicated provider for the entire procedure.
Step 4: Supervised Recovery
Your child wakes in our recovery area with you present. We do not discharge anyone until they meet clear recovery criteria. Expect grogginess for several hours and plan a quiet day at home.

For the right child, consolidating treatment into a single session is meaningfully better than spreading it out.

Treatment that would take five appointments awake is often completed in a single session, which means the decay is gone and your child can move on.
No Memory of the Procedure
Children under IV sedation typically remember nothing. For a child who has already had a frightening dental experience, that matters a great deal.
