Pediatric Dental Emergencies

If your child’s permanent tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown and gently rinse it without scrubbing.

Next, try to place the tooth back in the socket if possible. If not, store it in milk and get to a dentist immediately. Acting quickly improves the chances of saving the tooth.

If a tooth becomes loose or shifts out of place, have your child bite gently on a clean cloth to keep it stable. Do not attempt to reposition it yourself.

Call our office right away so we can evaluate the best course of action.

If your child chips or fractures a tooth, rinse their mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to minimize swelling.

If you can, gather any broken pieces of the tooth. Even if there is no immediate pain, visiting the dentist promptly can help prevent further complications.

For tooth pain, start by rinsing your child’s mouth with warm water and checking for any food debris using dental floss. Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling. Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gums or tooth.

Schedule a visit as soon as possible so we can identify the cause and provide relief.

If braces or other dental appliances are causing irritation, dental wax can provide relief. Roll a small piece of wax into a ball, flatten it, and place it over the problem area.

This creates a barrier between the braces and the soft tissues of the mouth, making eating and speaking more comfortable. If swallowed, the wax is completely safe.

An abscess is a serious infection that appears as a swollen, painful area on the gums.

Left untreated, an abscess can spread and lead to more significant health issues. Rinsing with warm salt water may help, but emergency dental care is necessary to treat the infection properly.
